Painting Tiles – Renovate Cheaply with Paint and Minimal Effort

Old bathroom tiles, yellowed wall tiles in the kitchen or floor tiles you no longer like… retiling can quickly cost several thousand euros. Painting tiles instead can be done for just a fraction of that – often saving up to 90%. And that’s not the only benefit: with tile paint, you can completely transform a room in just a weekend. No dust, no noise, no rubble – just paint, patience and the right technique. The result can look professional without having to remodel the entire space.

Why paint tiles instead of retiling?

A complete retiling is expensive, messy and often means weeks of construction work. Painting tiles saves both time and a significant amount of money. Especially in rental properties, this is a practical solution as old, outdated tiles can be modernized without replacing the surface.
The key is that the tiles themselves must still be stable. Small cracks or damaged grout can be repaired beforehand. Only if tiles are loose or badly damaged is painting no longer worthwhile.

Which surfaces are suitable?

Tile paint works well on wall tiles in kitchens or bathrooms. Floor tiles can also be painted, but only if they are not exposed to heavy, constant use. In shower cabins, paint doesn’t last as long.
For guest toilets, kitchen backsplashes or floors in less-used rooms, painting is an ideal alternative.

When not to paint tiles

  • Loose or badly damaged tiles

  • Surfaces with constant direct water contact, such as showers

  • Areas with mold that cannot be fully removed (health risk)

  • Tiles that have already been painted several times

Preparation: cleaning is essential

Thorough cleaning is crucial before painting. Grease, soap scum or silicone residues prevent primer and paint from adhering properly. Use a special tile cleaner or a strong degreaser. Any mold must be completely removed.
Then allow the surface to dry for at least 24 hours. Skipping this step risks peeling later.
Glossy tiles should be lightly sanded with fine sandpaper (220 grit). This helps the primer stick better. Wipe off sanding dust with a damp cloth.

Check grout and silicone

Before painting, inspect all grout lines. Crumbling grout should be repaired or replaced. Old silicone joints that are porous or moldy should be removed and replaced later, as silicone cannot be painted over.

Materials and tools needed

  • Tile paint or tile coating: for heavily used areas, 2K epoxy paint is recommended; for less demanding areas, acrylic paint is sufficient

  • Primer to ensure adhesion

  • Short-pile rollers for large areas and brushes for edges and corners

  • Painter’s tape and protective sheets to cover surrounding areas

  • Sandpaper, sponges, cloths for preparation

  • Grout pens or grout paint for a perfect finish

Step 1: apply primer

Primer is essential and should never be skipped. It prevents old colors from showing through and ensures paint adhesion. Start by priming the grout with a brush, then roll the surface. Drying time: at least 4–6 hours, preferably overnight.

Step 2: paint the tiles

If using 2K paint, always mix the components exactly as the manufacturer instructs, and only as much as you can apply within 2–4 hours.
Start with grout and edges using a brush, then paint the large areas with a roller in crisscross strokes to avoid streaks. Apply thin, even coats. Let the first coat dry for 4–6 hours before applying the second. Dark tiles often need three coats for full coverage.

Step 3: touch up grout

After painting, grout lines may still look uneven. Using a grout pen or special grout paint creates a neat, uniform look.

Step 4: let dry

Patience pays off. The surface may be dry to the touch after a few hours, but it only reaches full durability after a week. During the first 48 hours, avoid moisture as much as possible.

Durability and care

How long painted tiles last depends on the room. In a guest WC, the finish can last up to five years. In heavily used bathrooms, it’s usually two to three years. On floors, durability is shorter due to wear.
To maximize lifespan, use mild, pH-neutral cleaners. Avoid abrasive or harsh chemicals, and repair small chips immediately.

Practical tips for better results

  • Always ensure good ventilation

  • Remove masking tape while the paint is still slightly wet for clean edges

  • Apply several thin coats instead of one thick layer

  • On painted floor tiles, wait seven days before replacing furniture

  • Test the color on a small tile first

Advantages at a glance

  • Save up to 90% compared to retiling

  • No dirt or debris

  • Quick transformation within a weekend

  • Suitable for rental homes

  • Customizable: from white to pastel tones to concrete look

Conclusion

Painting tiles is a practical way to modernize bathrooms, kitchens or lightly used floors without major effort. With proper preparation, good-quality tile paint and careful application, results can look like new. Those who clean thoroughly, apply carefully and allow sufficient drying time can completely transform their spaces with minimal expense.
